The Truth About Skincare Routines: What You Actually Need (and What You Don’t)

In a world where 12-step routines and TikTok trends dominate beauty feeds, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Do you really need that serum, essence, mask, roller, and face mist every morning? The short answer: not always. Let’s cut through the noise and uncover what your skin truly needs — and how to build a smart, effective skincare routine that actually works.

Why Less Can Be More

More products don’t always mean better skin. In fact, layering too many actives (like retinol, AHAs, and vitamin C) without understanding how they interact can cause irritation, breakouts, or skin barrier damage. Skincare isn’t about how much you use — it’s about using the right things at the right time.

The 3-Step Core Routine (for Every Skin Type)

Every skin, from dry to oily to sensitive, needs these three pillars:

  1. Cleanser – Removes dirt, oil, SPF, and makeup without stripping skin.
Tip: Gel cleansers for oily skin, cream cleansers for dry skin.

  2. Moisturizer – Hydrates and protects your skin barrier.
Tip: Lightweight gel moisturizers work well for summer or oily skin; richer creams suit dry or mature skin.

  3. Sunscreen (SPF) – The most important anti-aging product.
Tip: Use daily — even indoors — and look for broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.

The Glow Boosters (Optional but Awesome)

Once your skin is happy with the basics, you can add these:

  • Serums: Targeted treatments like niacinamide for pores, hyaluronic acid for hydration, or vitamin C for brightening.

  • Exfoliants: Use AHA/BHA 1–2 times per week to slough off dead skin.

  • Face Masks: Great for self-care nights, masks give a temporary boost in hydration, glow, or calming.

What You Don’t Always Need

  • Toners: Modern cleansers do the job. Only use if it hydrates or balances pH.

  • Expensive eye creams: Most are glorified moisturizers. Unless you’re treating puffiness or dark circles, a good face cream will do.

  • Layered actives: Combining acids, retinol, and vitamin C in one routine can lead to over-exfoliation. Alternate instead.

Listen to Your Skin

Skincare should be intuitive. If your skin feels tight, red, or itchy, it's telling you something's off. A “glow” should never come at the cost of discomfort. Simplify, reset, and nourish.

Skincare by Season

Your skin changes with the seasons, and so should your products:

  • Winter: Focus on richer creams, oils, and barrier repair.

  • Summer: Lightweight gels, SPF, and extra cleansing.

  • Fall/Spring: Adjust as needed — listen to your skin’s moisture levels.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
